EAMES CUBES

Interaction, Play, Research, Laser Cutter, Puzzle Making

The Eames Cubes were created as an ode to the king and queen of mid-century modern design, Charles and Ray Eames. The cubes act as a visual decorative and playable piece to house research about the pair and to document their history of art and design through an immersive and interactive format. The set comprises of 18 plywood puzzle pieces that form two 8x8 boxes and one 4x4. Each of the pieces is fully reversible with content and information laid out on one side and imagery on the other. They are all labeled and numbered corresponding with the timeline of the Eames’ journey and have corresponding faces on both the large and small cubes.

The research for the written content was collected through a combination of online and library resources. I took influence by the Eames‘ love of geometry and mathematics, primary colors, plywood, toy design, and customization to inform my design. The plywood notches were cut out using the laser cutter and the print elements were adhered using sticker paper. Through this project, I was able to find my love for interactive experiences and the idea of communicating information through untraditional methods while prioritizing innovation and play.
